New TV deal

Post by Dade » Wednesday 03rd 2018f October 2018 03:12:38 PM

Just reading this about the new TV deal. Totally shocking that the lions share of the money goes to the top flight but hardly surprising and we only have ourselves to blame for signing the merger deal, all for a heavily weighted play-off structure. The thing is that it could end up costing clubs money too if gates are reduced due to television coverage.

And so you'll be happy when we return the portion of the (greater than before) prize money we will be entitled to, as 99% of televised matches are from the Premiership?

It's all just dumped into the same pot and that's fair, surely?

How much extra money do the former SFL clubs receive from the top league post merger? There is about £4.5m shared in prize money between the 3 leagues but bear in mind the SFL was in direct control and had an annual £2m/pa settlement, £1m/pa sponsor deal, the league cup and the challenge cup. When the merger was signed too we also gave up TV money we were receiving from ESPN and Sky. Half the gate from the playoffs also go back in the pot.

The SFL does not exist any more. When the merger happened the % distribution was significantly spread down and across the top 2 divisions compared to SPL days. A team competing at the top end of the Championship is significantly better off than they would previously have been.

That's beside the point though. People are adopting a default girning position here about second tier teams not getting the cash for our games being broadcast. That criticism is only valid if they don't accept money from TV deals that are based on top tier coverage.
