The sad thing is, if we didn't have an idiot manager who repeated the same system and formation with square pegs in round holes, the lad might have looked a world beater and we might have got more cash. Clearly the lad is better going forward than defending, so why not try a 3-5-2 and use him as a wing back?
I'm a bad man who doesn't waste time wondering what could've been when I am what could've been and what could not have been. I live on both sides of the fence. My grass is always green.

I think 3-5-2 is the way forward due to our complete lack of wide players.

I think a 3-5-2 would be shambolic for us. With 3 defenders you need a good bit of pace back there(with the full backs high up the pitch) and they need to be able to play football (our defenders distribution is abysmal). It's easy to say oh we have 5 centre backs lets play 3 of them at the back but we don't have the players that could play in a back 3 successfully.

This for me would be the best setup for us with the current players we have.

--------------------------------------Thomson---------------------------------

Kidd-----------------Muirhead-------Balatoni-------------New LB

- -------------------------McKee------------Taiwo-----------------------------

--------------------Harris-----------------------------Hippolyte--------------

--------------------------------Sibbald/Craigen-------------------------------

-----------------------------------Loy/Austin---------------------------------

I'm not a massive fan of Kidd but our record with him in the team was actually good. Grant has been nothing short of honking lately and looks unfit to me so I'd give Muirhead a proper run in the middle. Taiwo's job would be to protect the back 4 breaking up play etc. Although it's only one up top the midfield could get forward in numbers making it very attacking in the right moments.

Surely Watson, Ballatoni, Muirhead, Grant and Gasparatto aren't as slow as Hughes, Rennie, May, McKenzie, James, Christie or Nichols?

All good and well listing ex players but did they consistently play in the same staring 11? I was still very young when those players played for us but if I remember right Nichols and May weren't defenders.

Yes may certainly was not a defender, though Davie Nicholls did cover in defence for a few games and was outstanding, particularly in the demolition of Hearts in the cup in 2003. Some people might forget that we gave an incredible defensive display in the second half.

Our regular back line was James and Hughes with Mckenzie as sweeper.

I could be totally wrong but sure May covered as sweeper a few times. Nichol certainly played at Centre half on occasion as did Christie.

Anyway the point was that they all played in a back 3 and neither were particularly quick. Hughes was probably the quickest in all honesty.

Fair play maybe speed isn't the most important thing in a back 3 then. A back 3 with the defenders we have still fills me with dread though

Yeh to be fair the team of 03/04 was much more balanced all round however our main strength was still in attack. I would rather we sign better players to play in a 4-4-2 but with the squad we have I think we may be better suited to 3/5 at the back.

Oh to have a player like Davie Nicholls again. Rose tinted perhaps but he was one of the best midfielders in the division at the time and looked hard-as-nails. Also scored some brilliant goals IIRC too!

Your 3 5 2 is looking more and more likely now.

Could work well IMO but doubt Houston will go for it.

It appears a match winning team, as long as the opposition can't count......(sorry Dade, couldn't resist....)

Must be waiting on the cash for Llorente to fund it?

Haha knowing us I'm sure we'd still lose though. Remove McKee or Craigen!

According to the club no more deals are expected tonight.

Looks like Swansea have failed to meet our valuation of the player.
